Authorities have identified the Dubuque resident who was killed Saturday in a Delaware County crash. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. Saturday on Highway 20 near Earlville. The victim was identified as 24-year-old Jacob Gill of Dubuque. Two Iowa City residents were injured in the incident and transported by Earlville Fire and EMS to Regional Medical Center in Manchester. The report states a 21-year-old from La Motte was driving eastbound on Highway 20 and struck two cars that were parked on the shoulder, as well Gill.  

Authorities have released information regarding the two people killed in a UTV verses car accident on Saturday that left five others injured. The crash happened Saturday evening shortly before 9:30 PM, at the intersection of East Worthington Rd and Comer Rd in Dubuque County. A 10-year-old was found to be deceased on scene. Six people were transported to the hospital, all with serious to life threatening injuries. One of these subjects, 33-year-old Joshua Tack of Union, Iowa was declared deceased at the hospital. The accident remains under investigation.   

One person is dead following a workplace accident in Grant County. Friday morning the Grant County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call of a construction accident on Cty Q in Castle Rock Township. A construction crew was at a property to repair a roof on a farm building when a member of the crew fell through the roof, approximately 30 feet, and landed on the concrete floor below. Immediate medical aid was rendered by the co-workers and further life saving measures were provided once Highland EMS and State Patrol arrived on scene. As a result of the injures sustained in the fall, the 44-year-old man was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Grant County Coroners Office. The name of the victim is being withheld at this time, pending notification of family. This matter remains under investigation. 

If you’re starving for college football, you can get a taste of it later this month. The Badgers will host a public practice on Aug. 18 at 7 p.m. at Camp Randall Stadium, UW Athletics announced Wednesday. The free event will give fans a sneak peek at the new squad before the Sept. 6 season opener against Notre Dame, which will be played at Lambeau Field. Seating for the practice will be available on the west side of Camp Randall. Full concessions will not be available, and the practice will be canceled in the event of inclement weather.   

Iowa’s annual two-day sales tax “holiday” is this Friday and Saturday. The Iowa Department of Revenue has a long list of things that are exempt from sales taxes during this two-day period, as well as items that will still be taxed. The tax exemption applies to clothing under $100 and shoes under $100, giving the shopper a discount of between 6% to 7%, depending on the community. Iowa’s annual sales tax holiday kicked off today and runs through midnight on Saturday. 

A long-awaited store in Kennedy Mall is set to open next week. Marshalls is one of the largest U.S. off-price family apparel and home fashion retailers, along with its sister company, TJ Maxx. The new store is opening in a 24,000 square foot space next to Books-A-Million. The grand opening is set for Thursday, August 13 with doors opening at 8 AM.   

The Dubuque County Historical Society (DCHS) and the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium has announced the planned retirement of their president and chief executive officer, Kurt Strand. Strand has announced his decision to retire late 2026 or early 2027 after nine years in his position. The board of directors has initiated a succession plan and executive search process to identify Strand’s successor. Strand will remain in his role as president and CEO through late 2026 or early 2027 to assist with the leadership handoff and ensure organizational continuity  

State Representative Travis Tranel joined candidate for governor, Tom Tiffany for events across Southwest Wisconsin to discuss issues important to the region. On Tuesday the pair were in Prairie du Chien; on Wednesday they visited in Boscobel, Dickeyville, Cuba City. Discussions focused on manufacturing, agriculture, supporting producers, workforce development, and rural economic growth. Rep. Tranel is seeking reelection in November, while Tiffany is vying to be the next governor.

Following an announcement that the bridge between Illinois and Iowa would be closed until next week, the Iowa DOT has announced today that the bridge will reopen on Friday.  All lanes on the bridge will be restored to normal operations at approximately 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7. However, the eastbound lane will be closed on working days still. The lane will reopen for the evening commute and non-working days. This traffic pattern will remain in place until late September and allows crews to finish painting the bridge and apply concrete sealers to the deck and rail. 

The Iowa Pork Producers Association is planning what it calls a “Pork Chop Salute” the first Sunday of the Iowa State Fair to celebrate America’s birthday. They will be giving away 1,776 pork chops as part of their celebration for America 250 during the Iowa State Fair on Sunday, August 16th, starting at 11 a-m. Each person can get one free pork chop on a stick at the north side of the Pork Tent building until the association hit the 1776 mark.
