SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. — Two families have been displaced following a cooking fire in Sun Prairie on Monday.
A news release said officials were sent to the 2000 block of Wyoming Avenue for a report of a residential structure fire at about 5 p.m. Firefighters arrived to the scene in less than two minutes and confirmed everyone had safely evacuated the duplex.
Authorities entered one of the units and found an active fire in the kitchen. Crews extinguished the fire and searched the rest of the home but did not find any fire extension.
Officials said crews ventilated the home, though one of the units sustained extensive smoke damage.
Families from both homes were relocated. Sun Prairie officials also treated two of the residents for smoke inhalation.
Damages are estimated to be $20,000.
The National Fire Protection Association says cooking incidents are the main cause of home fires, with the leading cause of kitchen fires being unattended cooking.
