MADISON, Wis. — Staff at American Family Children’s Hospital are getting creative when it comes to treating patients hospitalized with COVID-19.
The hospital’s music therapy program works to comfort, engage and support patients.
Organizers say their typical sessions can’t happen during the pandemic, but with a little help from technology, they’re still providing patients with group music sessions.
“During COVID, which is naturally isolating of itself, I really want to use this experience over the program to provide that group dynamic with the feel of a group,” said Carly Ramthun, the hospital’s music therapist.
Research shows actively engaging in creating music has greater positive effects than passively listening to songs and watching.
The hospital’s music therapist is a full-time position that is funded through philanthropic efforts.
