MADISON, Wis. — Madison’s Streets Division is prepared to keep the city’s roads salted and plowed as a snow system moves through southern Wisconsin.
Once the snow starts sticking, the city will deploy 32 plows.
Crews will focus on the city’s “salt routes” at the start of the storm. These routes are the major thoroughfares of the city and make up a little more than 40% of all the traffic lanes in Madison. The city has cut down the number of salt routes this year since the Madison School District is doing virtual-only school and reductions in the city’s bus service.
A list of the streets that were cut from the salt route network can be found on the Streets Division’s website.
Streets not considered a salt route will not be plowed until three or more inches of snow.
Trucks will plow and apply salt as needed for the entirety of this weather system. In addition to salt trucks, three trucks will apply sand for traction on hills, curves and intersections that do not meet the salt route requirements. These roads are never salted in an effort to minimize the amount of salt that enters our drinking water.
At this time, it’s unclear if residential streets will be plowed or whether a snow emergency will be declared.
Street crews are asking drivers to stay home if possible and to be slow and patient if out on the roads.
