MADISON, Wis. — As temperatures drop and lakes begin to freeze, Dane County law enforcement officials are reminding the public about some safety requirements for vehicles driven on ice-covered bodies of water.
According to Dane County Sheriff’s Office Marine and Trail Enforcement, flotation inspections and certificates are no longer required to use a vehicle on frozen Dane County lakes, but other safety measures are still in place.
All vehicles less than 850 pounds used on the frozen waters of lakes Mendota, Monona and Wingra must be equipped with flotation devices.
Officials said vehicles that weigh 850 pounds or more require a special certificate.
More information about flotation requirements is available on the DCSO’s website.
