MADISON, Wis. — Nearly 1,500 students will graduate virtually Wednesday from Madison College, and then they will enter what has been a challenging job market for almost a year during the pandemic.
But Madison College’s Career and Employment Services advisor Rochelle Wanner said many of their students are actually at an advantage right now because so many of the professions students at the college enter are essential services, including automative work, becoming a dental assistant, or working in healthcare.
“I’m seeing confidence,” Wanner said. “I’m seeing students be confident as well. I’m also telling them you need to think a little bit differently, so maybe looking at remote opportunities.”
She said students are also using a new job posting tool online, Handshake, and doing more interviews over Zoom.
While times might be tough right now, Wanner said her students are taking it in stride.
“I think people are really taking a step back and doing some reflective thinking about what I really want to do,” Wanner said.
She said another option for some students amid the pandemic is to continue their education, but she said it’s important for those students to still try to pick up part-time work when possible.
