MADISON, Wis. — The state Department of Corrections announced it will convert Prairie du Chien Correctional Institution from a medium-security to minimum-security institution.
A news release said the change will lower the number of people on the DOC’s wait list to get into a minimum-security facility.
Although roughly three-quarters of PDCI’s 500 inmates are already classified as minimum custody, the other 25% of inmates will need to move to other institutions.
More inmates at the Crawford County prison will have the opportunity to participate in work release programs, which have been suspended due to the pandemic.
“Work release serves several purposes,” said DOC Secretary Kevin Carr. “It helps persons in our care develop a work history, and also improve or acquire new job skills. Those are things that can help people be successful when reentering the community, so we’re excited about the possibility of extending those opportunities to more individuals.”
Beginning next year, the DOC will review medium custody inmates at PDCI and determine their transfer locations.
