MADISON, Wis. — Dane County safety and parks officials are urging the public to stay off of the ice because conditions are unsafe for on-ice activities.
While many of the of Dane County’s lakes, lagoons and ice rinks may look frozen, officials said the ice is not stable, consistent or safe.
Marine and Trail deputies with the Dane County Sheriff’s Office said Friday that they responded to three rescue calls on Friday alone. One person fell through the ice on Mudd Lake while ice fishing, but he was able to get himself out of the water.
Individuals also fell through on Wingra and Crystal lakes on Friday.
DCSO officials said anyone who plans to take the risk of walking on the developing ice should make sure they’re wearing a life jacket and tell a friend or family member about their location.
Madison Parks officials said residents should refrain from skating or walking on ice rinks and lagoons until they are officially declared open. Officials said walking or skating on the ice early can delay the opening process.
