MADISON, Wis. — A home security camera at a residence in the 600 block of S. Dickinson Street caught a catalytic converter theft on camera overnight.
Police said the homeowner woke up to notifications on his phone showing him that a car stopped next to his 2007 Toyota Prius overnight. The video shows people cutting off his car’s catalytic converter in roughly a minute and a half.
In response to a the number of catalytic converter thefts in recent months, the Madison Police Department recommends drivers park in garages or well lit areas whenever possible.
Police also said having the converter welded to the car’s frame could make it harder to steal. Engraving your vehicle’s identification number (VIN) on the converter could help with recovering the part if it’s stolen.
