MARCELLON, Wis. — Columbia County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested James Tiedeman, 36, after he attacked his mother, armed himself with a piece of broken glass, barricaded himself in a room and refused to exit on Saturday afternoon around 4:30 p.m.
According to the incident report, the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center first received a call reporting a disturbance at a residence on County Highway CM near Dalton Road in Marcellon. The caller said his adult brother attacked their mother, took her to the floor and held her there.
The brother then broke a picture frame and armed himself with a piece of broken glass. An argument continued until he barricaded himself in a bedroom before law enforcement arrived.
Deputies said they attempted to have the suspect exit the bedroom unarmed by negotiating on the phone, however the suspect refused to do, saying that deputies would have to shoot him. Officials attempted to enter using less lethal options including bean bag rounds, which struck the suspect, and a taser, which was ineffective.
Police said they deployed a K9 but could not get the barricaded door opened enough to be successful. A deputy member of the emergency response team deployed two munition rounds of CS gas through a window.
After the approximately one hour long standoff, Tiedeman exited unarmed and was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.
Tiedeman is now being booked into the Columbia County Jail for charges of domestic related disorderly conduct while armed, domestic related battery, domestic related strangulation and resisting arrest while barricaded and armed.
