MADISON, Wis. — State and local leaders have released statements denouncing the violence that erupted at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday afternoon.
Members of the Wisconsin Senate Republican caucus condemned the violence in a statement.
“It is unacceptable and it is un-American,” the caucus wrote. “We cannot abide this assault on our republic. Violence, no matter the political affiliation or motive, has no place in our system of government and should not be tolerated.”

Democratic State Sen. Chris Larson said what happened in the nation’s capital was “nothing short of treason.
“At the urging of Donald Trump through lies and baseless accusations, a mob of his supporters gathered and stormed the United States Capitol in an attempt to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power. For a brief period of time, they succeeded,” Larson said in a statement.
Larson said the president and other Republican officials such as Sen. Ron Johnson have “continued to spread lies about the election in an effort to stir up anger bear personal responsibility for today’s events.
“They have proven themselves unfit to serve,” Larson said. “They laid the fuse and lit the match right along with Donald Trump. They don’t get to walk away when the powder keg blows.”

Republican State Sen. Steve Nass said those who violently breached the U.S. Capitol “must be met with swift and immediate justice.
“Americans of all political persuasions have the constitutional right to protest, but your politics never give you the right to commit any criminal acts or threaten public safety in any way,” Nass said. “As I did during the rioting and mob violence that ravaged our cities last year, I am condemning the violent thugs involved with the reprehensible conduct that has occurred at the U.S. Capitol today. I support law enforcement utilizing all means necessary to restore law and order.”
State Rep. Francesca Hong said the mob’s actions were the “inevitable consequence of an unhinged Trumpism” and that the country must do better.
“Those who have deliberately attacked the integrity of our election process are absolutely responsible for the rebellion we see today,” Hong said. “And the blame for this unacceptable violence extends to the leaders of the Republican Party, both in Wisconsin and across the country, who have deliberately undermined the results of this election and given credence to a criminal president.”

State Rep. Robyn Vining called the breach “an attack on our democracy” and said the public can be confident in the election results.
“It was free, fair, and transparent. Voters – not political parties, candidates, or legislative committees, or armed protestors storming government buildings – decide our elections. No evidence has been provided that would suggest that the election results are fraudulent. And this armed insurrection should be condemned at every level, from every elected official, of every political party. Democracy will prevail.”
