MADISON, Wis. — What happened at the U.S. Capitol is something many people were watching, including our children. Those who were old enough to understand what they witnessed provided their comments on what they saw.
News 3 Now’s morning photojournalist Mark Schilling asked his son, Daniel, what he felt hearing about what happened.
“When my dad told me about what happened at the Capitol, I was really surprised. There were shootings so I was also really worried.”
Morgan McGlone, the girl who started a virtual lemonade stand and raised thousands for a local non-profit in Madison, spoke about her emotions as she watched the break ins.
“Everyone had to hide under their seats. It was really bad. I don’t think it should happen anymore.”
The son of the MMSD teacher who made wooden desks for students across the state to aid their virtual learning felt that the response from crowds was “an exploitation of power.”
News 3 Now’s morning meteorologist Haddie McLean asked her kids, Izzy and Aidan, how they felt this could impact their future.
“It makes me question what the future of the U.S. is going to look like and what’s going to happen,” Izzy said.
“I hope this isn’t a normal thing. I hope it doesn’t happen to every Capitol. I hope this is the only time this happens because it’s kind of scary,” Aidan said
A Waunakee high school student talked about what she would like to see happen to those who committed federal crimes.
“We had white people, white supremacists that stormed the capitol building, putting them in lockdown and there were little to no repercussions. I would like to see everyone who stormed the capitol building to be fully prosecuted to the fullest extent. It’s unacceptable and domesic terrorism.”
Tolan Flores, the son of the Vice Chair of the Madison Police Civilian Oversight board, spoke about what he would have done differently if he had the power to do so.
“I probably would have tried my best to fix the stuff that everyone did and if I could control what they did, I wouldn’t have had them doing that.”
And a final note from Tolan on how we can do better in the future.
“I think we need to do a lot more peaceful stuff and reasonable stuff.”
