BARABOO, Wis. — Sauk County investigators have identified two of the three people they were hoping to talk to in connection to a homicide that occurred last fall at Devil’s Lake State Park.
The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office posted an image showing three people online Tuesday asking for the public’s help in identifying them. In an update on social media, officials said the man in the middle and woman have been identified. Detectives are still looking to learn the identify of the man on the left.
The sheriff’s office stressed the people shown in the photo are potential witnesses and should not be considered suspects in the homicide.
Authorities have received hundreds of possible tips since John Craig Schmutzer, 24, of Wauwatosa, was attacked and killed while hiking in October. His body was found along the Grottos Trail on the south side of the park.

Authorities believe Schmutzer was killed by a stranger as part of a random attack. In the several months since the murder, they have stressed the importance of people with information stepping forward.
Anyone with information should contact the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office at (608) 356-4895 or anonymously to the Sauk County Crime Stoppers at 1-888-847-7285.
