MADISON, Wis. — Madison police are reminding residents that calls from people claiming to be police officers demanding money are attempts to scam people into giving away money.
Madison Police Department Public Information Officer Tyler Grigg said the department received two complaints Tuesday reporting scam attempts.
One 26-year-old told police a person claiming to be an MPD detective told him to pay money or he would issue a warrant for the victim’s arrest. MPD quickly determined the call was a scam.
The same day, a 27-year-old man told police he was contacted by “Officer Rick Foster” who had a caller-ID that displayed the MPD North District’s phone number. Police said the victim was asked to send money to the impostor via an app. MPD officials confirmed with the victim that nobody with the name Rick Foster is employed by the department.
Just over two weeks ago, an elderly man received a similar call from someone impersonating an officer.
Anyone who receives calls from someone claiming to be a police officer and demanding money should report the call to authorities, Grigg said.
