MADISON, Wis. — Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway is calling for an end to anti-Asian harassment and violence that has risen since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a statement shared Thursday, Rhodes-Conway said racist comments by political leaders “have fanned the flames” of anti-Asian hate.
Her remarks come just two days after eight people, six of whom were Asian women, were shot and killed in Atlanta.
“The pain brought on by this type of inappropriate conduct not only impacts our Asian neighbors and friends but make our whole community weaker in a time when we need each other more than ever,” Rhodes-Conway said in a statement. “I stand in solidarity with our Asian community and Asian-American community and wish you healing and safety in these trying times.”
Other local leaders, including Francesca Hong, the first Asian American to serve in the state legislature, shared statements Wednesday condemning the violence in Atlanta.
