MADISON, Wis. — An investigation into a sexist slur uttered during a Madison Common Council meeting last September has ended with inconclusive results.
According to the city’s attorney, the report was not able to make a “definite conclusion” on who uttered a “vulgarity” during the meeting.
Last October, the Council passed a resolution in response to a complaint filed by Shadayra Kilfoy-Flores alleging that Alder Paul Skidmore had directed a gender-based slur at her during the meeting on Sept. 2. The Council’s resolution authorized $10,000 to investigate.
The report said investigators attempted to rule out several members whose Zoom microphones appeared to be activated while the word was said, but they could not conclude who may have said it.
The city said Zoom has been “extremely cooperative” during the process, and that “it took some time for its technicians and legal department to determine what data could be provided due to the fact that there was no pending legal proceeding in which a subpoena had been issued.
In the days following the meeting, city officials condemned the behavior, with Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway and Common Council President Sheri Carter calling it “totally unacceptable.”
