MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsinites now have until May 17 to file their state taxes. The news comes shortly after the IRS pushed back the federal income tax filing deadline to the same date because of the pandemic.
“This has been a hard year for everyone. People are still trying to catch up financially and emotionally,” Department of Revenue Secretary Peter Barca said. “Extending the tax deadline to May 17 should help make things a bit easier for those who need the extra time.”
The new filing deadline means people won’t have to file extension forms to be eligible for the new due date. Interest and late filing fees will not start to build until May 18.
The new deadline only applies to 2020 individual income tax returns and payments that would normally be due April 15.
“Roughly, half of all taxpayers in Wisconsin have already filed their tax returns, and most have received refunds, on average over $800,” Barca said. “We are still processing returns and issuing refunds and other credits that Wisconsinites rely on such as the Homestead Credit and Earned Income Tax Credit.”
Wisconsin law allows for the DOR to extend the filing deadline when the IRS does the same because of a presidentially-declared disaster.
