CAMBRIDGE, Wis. — A 39-year-old woman was hospitalized Wednesday for smoke inhalation after she re-entered her burning residence to rescue her pets from the fire.
Firefighters with the Cambridge Fire Department and deputies with the Dane County Sheriff’s Office responded to a house fire at 102. N. Pleasant St. around 6:30 a.m. after a neighbor called 911 to report the fire.
When crews arrived, they learned the sole occupant of the home had re-entered to rescue her pets.
Firefighters got the woman to safety where she was evaluated for smoke inhalation by emergency medical responders. The woman was then taken to a local hospital for treatment. She’s expected to make a full recovery.
Officials said the woman’s pet’s appear to be unharmed.
Crews are still working to determine the cause of the fire, though they said it likely started on the top floor of the home.
Fire officials did not provide a damage estimate for the home. Most of the building remains intact, according to a news release.
