MADISON, Wis. — At least four people in Dane County have experienced an overdose within the past 24 hours, according to public health officials.
Public Health Madison & Dane County and Madison police issued a public health alert Thursday due to the rise in drug-involved overdoses in the county. A similar public health alert was issued around the same time last year.
The alert is designed to raise community awareness and notify the public of the increased risk for overdose.
Officials said the cause of the recent spike is unknown, though it’s possible the mixture of illicit street drugs in the community could have changed.
Public health officials said the alert serves as a notice to recognize the signs of an overdose:
- Pale, sweaty or clammy skin
- Lips/fingertips turn blue
- Slow or irregular breathing: gasping, gurgling or snoring
- Difficult or unable to wake
If you suspect someone is experiencing an overdose, officials say to always call 911.
Treatment and recovery resources are available at the Behavioral Health Resource Center.
