MADISON, Wis. — Madison police have a warning for those planning to host parties during this year’s Mifflin Street Block Party: they’ll be enforcing the county’s health order, and that could mean facing hundreds of dollars in fines.
This year’s block party is once again not a City-permitted or sanctioned event, but is scheduled for Saturday, April 24.
In a blog post Monday afternoon, Madison police said a letter was sent to people living in the Mifflin Street area reminding them of the latest Emergency Order from Public Health Madison & Dane County, which removed limits on outdoor gatherings — as long as people maintain 6 feet of physical distancing. Indoor gatherings are limited to 150 people if there are people eating and drinking, and 6 feet of physical distancing is also required.
Police say if they’re called to investigate a house party and find those regulations being violated, the people may be hit with a ticket of at least $376 for “Creating/Permitting a Health Nuisance.”
Madison police say they will also strictly enforce underage drinking, procuring alcohol, dispensing alcohol and open intoxicants ordinances if they’re called to investigate a party.
Police say they will also report any UW-Madison student getting a ticket for a house party on the weekend of the 24th to the Office of the Dean of Students and the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards for possible discipline from the university.
Last year, gathering bans were strictly enforced by Madison police, as any parties would have violated Gov. Evers’ original “Safer at Home” order. Police later reported that no arrests or citations were made.
