MADISON, Wis. — The Dane County Sheriff’s Office is warning of another phone scam in the county trying to convince people a family member has been in an accident and is being held in jail.
The Sheriff’s Office says the scammers claim the family member won’t be released until a large amount of cash is provided for bond, while someone else on the line poses as an attorney and tells the person receiving the call not to tell anyone about the incident.
A courier will then show up in person to collect the money. The Sheriff’s Office says if the scam is successful in getting money from the victim, the scammers will continue to try to get more money from them by playing on emotions, saying the family member is hurt and needs help.
Authorities are reminding people to never give out personal information over the phone or give money to someone who calls you.
If you’ve been a victim of this scam, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office says you should call your local police department.
