MADISON, Wis. — Unemployment rates last month in Wisconsin’s 12 metro areas declined or stayed in the same or decreased, but they are still up over the past year.
According to new estimates and employment statistics from the Department of Workforce Development released Wednesday, unemployment rates declined or stayed the same in 24 of the state’s 34 largest cities in March. However, the rates are still up in 33 of those cities over the past year, mostly due to the pandemic.
It’s a similar story for Wisconsin counties, too. Unemployment rates declined or stayed the same in 63 of Wisconsin’s 72 counties in March, but only for 13 counties over the past year.
Earlier this month, a report showed the state’s unemployment rate held steady at 3.8% in March, which is far below the national rate of 6%.
