MADISON, Wis. — Public Health Madison & Dane County will resume using Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine this week after federal regulators cleared the use of the shot late last week.
Health officials said the single-dose vaccine will be available at the Alliant Energy Center clinic starting Wednesday. Because the vaccine is a single dose, those who get it will be fully vaccinated two weeks after getting the shot.

A PHMDC spokesperson said they are moving forward with using the vaccine based on a recommendation from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services. As of Tuesday afternoon, DHS’ website did not have updated guidance on the use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
When asked Tuesday if DHS plans to re-approve use of the vaccine on a statewide level, Gov. Tony Evers said an announcement will likely be made in the next few days. DHS previously instructed vaccinators to hold onto their doses of Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine until federal regulators completed their review, which happened Friday.
On Tuesday, PHMDC officials announced they are no longer requiring appointments for vaccination at the Alliant Energy Center.
