MADISON, Wis. — The Boys & Girls Club of Dane County is launching a week-long campaign to dispel misinformation about COVID-19 vaccines and raise awareness about their effectiveness.
The week-long efforts start Monday, May 10 and will end Saturday, May 15 with a COVID-19 vaccination clinic hosted by the Boys & Girls Club.
““We will address the misinformation so that hesitant individuals have facts to fully inform their vaccination decision,” says Dr. Sarah Ghee, chief operating officer of BGCDC. “We all must take steps to increase our own awareness regarding the issue.”
The week of events kicks off Monday with a COVID-19 awareness PSA video competition for high schoolers and college undergraduates. Video submissions should focus on “spreading factual, positive information” about vaccine. The top three winners will get a cash prize, and the winning video will be shared locally. Submissions will be accepted until 5 p.m. on June 4, and the top three winners will be announced June 16.
On Tuesday, the organization plans to host a walk around the Wisconsin State Capitol to highlight the group’s four goals throughout the week: raising awareness, addressing concerns, tackling misinformation and encouraging an informed decision. The first 50 people in attendance will get a free t-shirt.
Organizers also plan to host two separate townhalls on Wednesday and Thursday to address topics like vaccine hesitancy in BIPOC communities, the history behind the science of vaccines, personal stories, and more. The first of the town halls will be aimed at community members and health care professionals, and the second will be led by youth for youth.
On Friday, the Boys & Girls Club will host a free cookout at Allied Family Center Boys & Girls Club located at 4619 Jenewein Road in Fitchburg from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Organizers plan to provide resources about COVID-19 vaccines to make sure community members can make an informed decision about getting vaccinated.
The next day, Saturday, May 15, the Boys & Girls Club will host a vaccine clinic at Allied Family Center Boys & Girls Club from 10 a.m. to noon. Volunteers from the Fitchburg Family Pharmacy and UW-Madison School of Pharmacy will administer Pfizer’s vaccine to anyone ages 16 and up. The second shot will be administered at the same time and place on Saturday, June 5.
