MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is again asking the public to avoid burning this weekend as fire danger remains very high across much of the state.
The combination of low relative humidity across Wisconsin and warm temperatures means the risk for quickly-spreading fires is high.
The biggest threat is in the upper two-thirds of the state, according to the DNR, but there is still a moderate fire threat in Columbia, Dane, Dodge, Grant, Green, Iowa, Jefferson, Richland, Rock and Sauk Counties.
The DNR says it has responded to more than 600 wildfires so far this year, which have burned a total of more than 1,700 acres. Of those 611 fires, 53 happened last week.
