MADISON, Wis.– Two industries are joining forces after a recent spike in hate crimes against Asian-American and Pacific-Islander communities.
Ending racism in the United States won’t be as easy as following a recipe, but it starts with what you know. For Pasture and Plenty owner Christy McKenzie, that’s baked goods.
“In adversity we bloom.”

McKenzie and nine other Madison bakers are putting their aprons on and standing in solidarity with anti-hate groups by hosting the “Bakers Against Racism” seedling and bake sale.
“We ask bakers to bake whatever quantity makes sense for them,” McKenzie said. “That might be 60 dozen for a big bakery and it might be two dozen for a smaller baker.”
The greens sold outside first sprouted at Raleigh’s Hillside Farm and Squashington Farm.
“Everything from basil and dill to collard greens and butternut squash ready for the garden,” McKenzie said.
The proceeds go to urban agriculture projects fighting for food access, food justice and food advocacy.
“Those projects are Neighborhood Food Solutions, Urban Triage, the Trade Routes Culinary Collective and Rooted Wisconsin with their work at Troy Gardens and their work at the Badger Rock Community Center,” McKenzie said.
This is McKenzie’s fourth time hosting the sale in Madison. Nationwide, similar efforts have raised more than $2 million.
“Every one of our bake sales has sold out. It’s really been inspiring to see how people show up for these types of community events,” McKenzie said.
McKenzie said that community effort is what it takes to make a difference, even if it’s just by purchasing a box of cookies.
“Do whatever you can,” McKenzie said. “We can only make change if we actively do it every day.”
McKenzie plans to host more bake sales and similar events in the future.
