BELOIT, Wis. — The City of Beloit is asking residents to hold off on non-essential water usage while it helps the Village of Rockton with its water supply as dozens of fire crews try to contain a massive fire at a chemical plant.
Beloit city officials posted on Facebook Monday afternoon saying they were helping the Rockton community with water supply. As they monitor water levels, they’re asking people in Beloit to conserve water and avoid using water for things like washing cars and sprinkling lawns.
A massive fire started at Chemtool in Rockton at about 7 a.m. Monday. The fire caused debris to fall from the sky in Rockton and people within in a one-mile radius of the plant were told to evacuate. As of 3 p.m. Monday, the fire was still burning. One firefighter has been hurt while trying to contain the fire as dozens of departments from northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin have responded to the scene.
