MADISON, Wis.– How many sunburst chairs usually fit on the Memorial Union’s Terrace?
Pre-COVID, the answer was 5,000!All issues
The Terrace has undergone change after change this past year. It was closed. Reservation-only. Then, open only to students.
Now, the Terrace is back open to everyone, but capacity is still capped at 35%, or to put in terms of Sunburst chairs, 1,700, out of what Communications Director Shauna Breneman calls “an abundance of caution.”
“We are one of the top destinations for tourists in the state,” Breneman said, proudly. “We are once again seeing the Terrace fill with the experiences and life we love seeing.”

Despite its limited capacity, the Union is once again offering a slew of summer events, from free films to live music. Breneman says most of the 1,200+ events are organized by students.
“These students work really hard,” she said. “And they’re learning everything from business management to marketing to graphic design. They’re gaining hands-on skills they can take into their careers.”
Der Rathskeller and the famous Brat Stand are back open, too, as well as a brand-new seasonal option: the Sunset Lounge & Outdoor Restaurant. Open for dinner Thursday through Saturday, the restaurant serves appetizers, pizza, cocktails, and more.
“It’s also a way to ensure you have your spot on the Terrace,” said Breneman, adding that the restaurant takes reservations.
Visitors must be members to enjoy the Union. There are day, annual, and lifetime membership options available. A one-day pass costs $1, and that money is returned to the student organizations that plan fun, and often free, events on campus.
