MADISON, Wis. — A new program at UW Health is helping nurses begin their first professional nursing job and avoid burn out.
The ambulatory nurse program is designed for new nurses who just finished school. The program began in February, but a new group will start the program in August.
The program places nurses in a clinic setting with a mentor to learn the job in a real-world, supportive setting.
“Nursing is a really intense profession and there’s a lot to know and a lot to learn, so it’s really important to have that person at your side there to call on whenever you might need it,” nursing education specialist Terri White says.
The hope is the program also helps prevent burnout. Nursing turnover rates are roughly 30% in the first year of practice and over 50% in the second year. The retention rate is higher for health care systems with a nurse residency program.
