MADISON, Wis. — One person was injured Thursday night after an attempt to freshen up his apartment went wrong.
Fire officials said they responded to the 100 block of Langdon Street just before 10 p.m. for a report of a stovetop fire. The resident told firefighters he had put a pot of water on the stove and put a bowl of candle wax in it to melt the wax and freshen up the air.
The resident said he left the stove unattended for a bit, and he found fire on the stovetop when he returned. He then tried putting out the fire with some wet towels but was unsuccessful. According to an incident report, he grabbed his cats and evacuated the apartment to call 911. Other building occupants also evacuated.
When firefighters arrived, they entered the man’s apartment and found the fire still burning. Crews put out the fire and worked to ventilate the apartment.
The occupant suffered an injury during the fire and sought medical treatment on his own.
