MADISON, Wis. — Madison police stopped dozens of drivers Monday for speeding on East Washington Avenue in an attempt to crack down on dangerous driving that has already led to four deaths on the eastern corridor this year.
The traffic stops were part of an enhanced enforcement project by the Madison Police Department that focused on East Washington Avenue at Ingersoll Street. The speed limit is 25 mph in that area.
Police said throughout the course of their traffic enforcement they stopped a total of 24 vehicles for speeding. All the vehicles stopped were going at least 14 mph over the posted limit.
One driver drove away from police during an attempted traffic stop.
Last month, two people were killed on East Washington Avenue within a week. Four people have been killed on the road this year alone.
