MADISON, Wis. — An SSM Health nurse was honored with a special award for going above and beyond to make sure her patients were as comfortable as possible.
Pam Dalhoff, a registered nurse with SSM Health, received a DAISY Award for helping a couple spend time together while they were both hospitalized this spring.
In early April, Art and Phyllis Hellendbrand, a Waunakee couple married for more than 70 years, were both hospitalized at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital. When they were first hospitalized, the couple were in rooms on separate sides of the hospital. Nursing staff then worked to get Art and Phyllis on the same floor. But the couple wanted to be a bit closer, so Dalhoff stepped in.
During Easter weekend, she stepped in to get Art and Phyllis into the same room. Not long after, Art and Phyllis both died.
Pamela Olsen, the couple’s daughter, wrote the following message to nominate Dalhoff for the DAISY Award:
“Pam and the St. Mary’s Hospital nursing staff went above and beyond to bring our parents together into one room at the hospital. … Our father was very sick, and the doctors and nurses knew time was of the essence for him, and how important it was for our parents to stay together after being married for nearly 71 years. The SSM staff made it happen; they were able to get our parents into one room on Easter Sunday. Pam was so determined to do what she could to make this happen. She and the other SSM nurses were angels for our parents. We are forever grateful!”
