WAUNAKEE, Wis. — Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul and some of the Democrats running for the state’s U.S. Senate seat in 2022 hosted a fundraising event on Sunday afternoon at Schumacher Farm Park in Waunakee.
The event was sponsored by the Grassroots Organization of Waunakee and Waunakee Dems.
“You’re seeing from not only Democrats but a lot of people a desire to move back to greater unity,” Kaul told News 3 Now.
On the future, Kaul said people in the state want to see politicians “working together to get things done for the people of Wisconsin.”
Last week, Kaul reported he had raised nearly $411,000 in the first six months of the year and had more than $537,000 cash on hand. Two Republicans are running against him: University of Wisconsin-Madison professor Ryan Owens and Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney.
News 3 Now also had the chance to talk with several of the Democrats running for Wisconsin’s U.S. Senate seat, which is currently held by Republican Sen. Ron Johnson.
Johnson has not said if he plans on seeking a third term in office.
One Democratic candidate, Dr. Gillian Battino, said her main goal is to bring Wisconsinites together.
“I think we really need to work for every single vote no matter what part of the state we’re talking about,” Battino said. “Just making sure we’re listening to folks and addressing individual needs of voters.”
Milwaukee Bucks Senior Vice President Alex Lasry echoed a similar message, saying it’s important to get to all parts of the state and find ways to bring new jobs and investment to Wisconsin.
“How do we make sure the recovery is one for everyone?” Lasry said. “We want to give Wisconsin a voice in D.C., and give (Democratic Sen.) Tammy Baldwin a true partner and bring real results and real change to the state of Wisconsin.”
Outagamie County executive Tom Nelson also took shots at Sen. Johnson, saying the race is going to be a “72 county campaign all over the state,” and that his strength coming from a Republican county is that he has faced Republicans like Johnson.
“I think that’s what you’ll need,” Nelson said. “Someone who has been tested, someone who has gone up against Republicans in Republican areas, and not just win once, but six times.”
Wisconsin State Treasurer Sarah Godlewski, State Sen. Chris Larson, business owner Adam Murphy and Milwaukee attorney Peter Peckarsky have also already declared for the 2022 race.
