FORT ATKINSON, Wis. — The flames at a Fort Atkinson warehouse that burned down Tuesday continued to burn Wednesday morning, and they’ll likely keep burning for a couple more days.
Fort Atkinson Fire Chief Daryl Rausch said crews don’t plan to use any more water to put out the flames, because the building is already considered a total loss. Tuesday’s efforts to fight the blaze led to runoff issues with water draining into the Rock River.
In total, firefighters used an estimated 1 million gallons to fight the fire.
Rausch said further evacuations are unlikely due to lessening smoke, but the Environmental Protection Agency is responding to monitor air safety as a precaution.
On Tuesday, Rausch said two firefighters suffered heat-related injuries while battling the blaze. Fire officials on Wednesday confirmed a third firefighter suffered a cut while fighting the fire. The firefighter was ultimately taken to UW Hospital where he underwent surgery.
