PORTAGE, Wis. — Several people were displaced from a multi-unit apartment building Wednesday evening when a stovetop fire caused smoke damage in several units.
Portage firefighters were dispatched around 6:30 p.m. to the Village House Apartments at 2830 Village Rd. after getting reports that black smoke was coming from a first-floor apartment.
When crews got there, they found a moderate amount of smoke coming from the 24-unit building. Police arrived a short time later to help with evacuations as firefighters worked to put out the fire.
According to a Facebook post from the Portage Fire Department, the fire started in the kitchen of a first-floor apartment. Crews were able to put out the flames before they spread to other parts of the building. The tenant wasn’t home when the fire started.
Once the smoke and carbon monoxide was cleared from the building, the evacuated residents were allowed to return to grab their essential belongings.
Some residents were able to find lodging, and others are getting assistance from the Red Cross.
The north side of the building sustained heavy smoke damage. No one was injured.
The fire is still under investigation.
