MADISON, Wis. — The Madison Metropolitan School District has changed the first day of school for some grades.
According to a letter sent to families Thursday, students in the following grades will start classes Sept. 2:
- 4K
- Kindergarten
- 1st
- 6th
- 7th
- 9th
- 10th
All grades 4K-12 will return Sept. 3.
The district said the school year calendar was adjusted to “support the social-emotional needs of students who are promoting to the next school level” after receiving family feedback and having discussions with school leaders and Madison Teachers Inc. As such, students in 1st, 7th and 10th grades will begin Sept. 2.
“We recognize some students entering these grade levels may not have been present in schools since the start of the pandemic, and therefore not had the time and space to appropriately orient themselves with school buildings and routines on the first day,” MMSD Chief Academic Officer Dr. Marvin Pryor said in a statement.
MMSD said schools will provide families with back-to-school information in the coming days.
