MADISON, Wis. — WISC-TV is being honored with a National Edward R. Murrow award for Overall Excellence by the Radio Television Digital News Association.
“2020 came with a unique set of challenges for broadcasters. Journalists were asked to keep up with a breakneck pace of coverage of Covid-19, a social justice movement, and a divisive Presidential election, all while adjusting to remote work and trying to keep our families healthy and safe,” WISC-TV News Director Sarah Gray said. Across the country, journalists did just that — knowing our communities relied on the critical information we provided.”
In May, the RTDNA recognized more than 750 winners of the Regional Murrow Awards, which advanced them to the national competition. WISC-TV’s win in that competition marked the station’s second year in a row winning a Regional Edward R. Murrow award for Overall Excellence.
“Our team of dedicated Journalists accepted that challenge with grace day after day after day. It’s why accepting this award, this year, means so much to our team,” Gray said. “Every person on our staff had a role in this award, and we’re proud to share it together.”
In total, eight organizations nationwide received national awards for Overall Excellence in their categories.
“This year especially, we are honored to recognize outstanding achievements in broadcast and digital journalism,” RTDNA Executive Director Dan Shelley said. “The past 18 months have been some of the most challenging in the history of our profession, and these recipients — among thousands of other journalists — clearly fulfilled their obligations to serve the public.”

In May, Madalyn O’Neill and photojournalist Lance Heidt were also honored with a Murrow award for Hard News for their story on how the Madison Police Department is incorporating meditation to help officers reduce stress, and how meditation brought some peace to Officer Matt Kenny and the mother of Tony Robinson after Kenny shot and killed Robinson in 2015.
