MADISON, Wis. — The Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the teen killed in a weekend shooting near Camp Randall.
Police said nearly 100 people were in the area when shots were fired in the 10 block of Lathrop Street around 11:50 p.m. Saturday. A while later, a teen showed up at a local hospital with a gunshot wound. Life saving measures were attempted, but the teen died shortly after arriving.
Authorities have since identified the teen as 17-year-old Jovan J. Freeny of Fitchburg. The medical examiner confirmed Freeny died from injuries he suffered in the shooting.
During a Sunday press conference, Assistant Chief with the City of Madison Police Department Paige Valenta said roughly the people in the crowd were in the area at the time for a party. Freeny was reportedly a party goer, but it’s unclear if he was the intended victim of the shooting, police said.
In a statement shared earlier this week, MMSD spokesperson Tim LeMonds called Freeny’s death “heartbreaking.”
“This was heartbreaking news to all of us at MMSD,” LeMonds said in a statement to News 3 Now. “Although information has been very limited beyond what has been reported in the news and on social media, MMSD staff are focused on developing a comprehensive support plan to assist in connecting both students and staff with the services they need during this difficult time.”
Saturday night’s homicide was the fourth in Madison so far this year. The first was back in April in a shooting at a South Park Street gas station. The second and third were separate shootings over the Fourth of July weekend.
Freeny’s death is still under investigation by the Madison Police Department and the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office. As of Tuesday, Madison police had not yet publicly identified a suspect.
