MADISON, Wis. — Gov. Tony Evers has ordered flags be flown at half-staff Saturday in honor of a Navy fireman who was killed during the attack n Pearl Harbor.
Navy Fireman First Class Kenneth E. Doernenburg’s remains were recovered by Navy personnel in the wake of the Dec. 7, 1941 attack. A total of 429 crewmen were killed.
“As Navy Fireman First Class Kenneth E. Doernenburg is finally laid to rest in the place he once called home, we reflect on and remember his sacrifice in service to our country,” Evers said. “We honor his memory and join in mourning his loss.”
In 2015, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency exhumed the remains of USS Oklahoma crew members for possible identification. Doernenburg’s remains were identified on March 25.
Doernenburg will be laid to rest with full military honors at Elmwood Cemetary in his hometown of Antigo, Wisconsin on Saturday.
