MADISON, Wis. — A number of top Wisconsin Democrats, including Gov. Tony Evers, U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin and Attorney General Josh Kaul, got together virtually Thursday to kick off a campaign aimed at boosting support for the party and its key legislative priorities.
A year away from the 2022 midterm elections, Democrats in Wisconsin are trying to make the early case to voters that things in the Badger State have moved forward in the past year with a Democrat in the White House and state offices.
During a press call, Baldwin emphasized the importance of the race for Sen. Ron Johnson’s seat. While Johnson has not yet said if he will seek re-election, a dozen candidates have already declared their candidacy in the Democratic primary for the seat.
“The entire balance of the United States Senate could come down to the state of Wisconsin, and just like in 2020, the eyes of the nation are on us and we’re going to have one of the most expensive and competitive, intense Senate races in the entire country,” she said.
The One Year to Win Weekend of Action will see Democrats knocking on doors, making phone calls and organizing to push their agenda and make their case to voters.
It comes in the wake of a Marquette University Law School poll that found Evers and Johnson would both likely lose re-election if voters cast their ballots this year.
