Galena City Council members have approved a land transfer to allow for a renovation project at the city’s middle school. Under the agreement, the City of Galena transferred two separate parcels totaling 22,739 square feet to the Galena school district. One of the parcels contains an aging water tower, scheduled to be removed this summer. Reports say the land will be used by the school district for an addition to the middle school and related parking and campus improvements. In the agreement, the district also transferred 652 square feet of its land to the city to ensure that the city can access a city water pumphouse located near the school. Each parcel was exchanged for $1. Construction will begin in May and when it’s completed, it will house the district’s pre-K through eighth-grade students and is scheduled to open in the fall of 2023.
