STOUGHTON, Wis. — Work is underway on the first phase of a project designed to rehabilitate the Yahara River waterfront south of downtown Stoughton.
Earlier this week, construction began on a riverwalk trail and pedestrian bridge to connect Mandt Park and a redevelopment area on the opposite side of the river.
Later phases of the project will include new parklands and a whitewater park.
“(There are) a few different goals,” Dan Glynn, the director of the city’s parks department, said. “This is a multi-objective project; of course, we want to improve river recreation in the city but also improve the ecology of the river by reconstructing the dam which will help water quality.”
Work on the first phase is set to wrap up in August. Construction on the riverwalk park phase is scheduled to start next summer and finish next winter.
In 2018, the city received a $500,000 state grant to tear down a vacant building to make way for the park as well as other improvements, the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation announced at the time.
