MADISON, Wis. — A grand jury on Wednesday returned an indictment against a Town of Madison man accused of stealing a handgun during a drug deal on the Fitchburg border last month, the justice department said.
Katoine Richardson, 19, faces three federal gun charges after he allegedly stole a handgun from a person he had met to sell marijuana to in the 2800 block of Oregon Road on March 18.
According to the federal complaint, which was filed on April 8, the victim bought the Glock handgun in Illinois in 2021. The victim had the gun with him when he went to meet Richardson on March 18.
The complaint alleges the victim got into Richardson’s vehicle, at which point Richardson and another man pointed black handguns with strobe lights on them at him and took the Glock as well as $120 in cash.
Speaking to officers after being arrested, Richardson initially denied taking the gun, saying the other man in his vehicle took it instead. Richardson admitted that at some point he had it in his possession, the complaint said.
Richardson also faces 14 state charges stemming from the robbery. A pre-trial conference in the state case is set for May 25, online court records show.
At the time of the robbery, Richardson was out on bail after being arrested on State Street in an incident that saw shots fired and an officer hit. The Wisconsin Department of Justice said in October that Madison Police Department officer Keith Brown fired his gun during the incident and hit a fellow officer.
Officials later determined Richardson’s gun went off during the arrest and that Richardson and an officer were touching it when it fired.
