MADISON, Wis. — A Madison man was forced out of his apartment Monday after a fire.
Madison Fire Department crews were sent to a complex on Deer Valley Road just after 9:30 p.m. after residents reported seeing smoke. Officials said one of the residents returned home as firefighters were searching the building.
When the man opened his door, he saw dark, heavy smoke. He left the building and firefighters entered. Crews found burned items on the stovetop and damage to the cabinets above.
The man had reportedly left a bag of groceries on the stove. Officials believe he may have bumped a dial and turned the stove on before leaving his apartment.
The unit was cleared of smoke but deemed uninhabitable because of the extent of the damage. The man is being assisted by the American Red Cross.
