SAN DIEGO — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers in southern California on Monday arrested an 18-year-old man wanted in a deadly 2021 shooting in Milwaukee, the agency said Friday.
In a news release, the agency said officers arrested Ismael Eli Moreno, Jr., at the San Ysidro port of entry around 4:30 p.m. Monday. He was reportedly trying to re-enter the U.S. from Tijuana, Mexico.
Border protection officers discovered a felony warrant for Moreno’s arrest during a routine check and took him into custody without incident.
Moreno was wanted in connection with a Feb. 6, 2021, shooting in Milwaukee that left 22-year-old Purcell Pearson dead.
Officials said Moreno and another teen went to meet Purcell to buy some designer glasses. The three met up and video reportedly showed Moreno and the teen drive away without paying for the glasses. Pearson held on to their van until someone opened fire.
Online court records show Moreno faces a charge of first-degree reckless homicide as a party to a crime.
The other teen, Tyrell Joseph, 18, of Milwaukee, was sentenced in March to nine years in prison and six years of extended supervision, online court records show. Milwaukee CBS affiliate WDJT-TV reported he apologized in court for his role in Purcell’s death.
Earlier this year, Joseph pleaded guilty to a charge of second-degree reckless homicide.
