MADISON, Wis. — Public Health Madison and Dane County is speaking out about the importance of storing guns securely when it comes to helping prevent gun violence in the community.
Officials from PHMDC and the “Be SMART” gun safety campaign spoke Tuesday on how responsible gun ownership can help keep guns off the streets.
“We believe most gun owners want to be responsible gun owners, so we’re here today to talk about what all of us — gun owners and non-gun owners alike — can do to make sure children don’t have unsupervised access to guns,” Katie Smart from the Be SMART program said.
Each letter in the “SMART” acronym stands for a basic gun safety measure — with “S” standing for “Secure storage”, “M” standing for “modeling responsible behavior”, “A” standing for “asking about gun presence in other homes”, “R” standing for “recognizing the role of guns in suicide” and “T” standing for “tell your peers to be smart.”
Tuesday’s event was the first in a series of violence prevention seminars aimed at reducing violence and gun deaths in the community.
