MADISON, Wis. — Tom Nelson, a Democrat running for Senate in Wisconsin, has suspended his campaign.
The Outagamie County Executive announced his decision Monday, saying that his team ran out of money. He also endorsed Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes.
Today I am suspending my campaign for the U.S. Senate. I am so thankful for the work that we have done and the movement we have built.

Nelson’s departure slims the field to just three front-runners. Barnes, State Treasurer Sarah Godlewski and Milwaukee Bucks executive Alex Lasry are all vying to unseat Senator Johnson.
Barnes released a statement after receiving Nelson’s endorsement.
“I deeply respect Tom Nelson’s commitment to the working people in this state and I’m thankful for his endorsement,” the Lieutenant Governor said. “It will take all of us coming together in every corner of this state to beat Ron Johnson.”
Voters will head to the polls next month to decide which Democrat will run head-to-head against Johnson in November.
Nelson issued a statement Monday regarding the suspension of his campaign.
“I am proud of the race we ran and the ideas we put forward like a national industrial strategy to build good paying jobs in our communities, Medicare for All to ensure everyone has access to health care, a one-of-a-kind food sovereignty plan to lift up our family farmers, bust up Big Ag and help consumers, and a Green New Deal so our children and their children have a planet to live on.
Unfortunately, money matters way too much in politics and running against two self-funding millionaires proved too much for this pastor’s kid.”
