JANESVILLE, Wis. — Crime is occurring less and less frequently in Janesville, a 2021 report shows.
The Janesville Police Department released its 2021 report Monday, detailing the work that officers did last year. Police responded to 60,425 incidents last year ranging from crashes to shootings, a 6% jump from 2020 but still well below pre-pandemic levels.
Police made 3,112 arrests last year, a 17% increase from 2020. Adult arrests increased by 14% while juvenile arrests jumped up by 42%, from 358 in 2020 to 507 in 2021.
Despite the rise in arrests, Janesville’s crime rate dropped by 11% from 2020. Incidents of violent crime dropped from 145 in 2020 to 142 in 2021, and incidents of property crime fell from 1,399 to 1,180. The report shows that the majority of crimes committed in the city were crimes against property.
The drop in crime follows a decade-long trend in Janesville. In a foreword introducing the report, Police Chief David Moore said the city’s crime rate was at a 40-year low in 2021.
The report shows that the city did see a significant rise in traffic citations last year. Traffic stops increased 24% from 2020, and 5,431 citations were issued, including 357 for operating while intoxicated. The city also saw an increase in crashes from 1,251 to 1,486, still below pre-pandemic numbers.
