MENOMONIE, Wis. — Wisconsin is known for many things, cheese, nature, and of course, mullets. Wisconsin kids took four of the top 8 spots in a national mullet championship, including 1st place in both the kids and teens divisions.
Created in 2020, the USA Mullet Championships swept the internet this weekend. One set of locks stood out from the rest, an eight-year-old boy from Menomonie, Wisconsin, Emmitt Bailey.
Emmitt, AKA “Mullet Boy” lived up to his name, winning the 2022 USA Mullet Championships kids division.
He knew right away what he was going to spend his $2,500 in prize money on, “I’m buying a go-kart, I want to be a professional race car driver,” Emmitt said.
This future race car driver started growing it two years ago, for a simple reason. “I wanted cool hockey hair. Before I had a mullet I was bald,” Emmitt said.
But the road to the top wasn’t always a straightaway. His mother, Erin Bailey says “I was not completely on board when he decided he wanted to start growing out his mullet. We got pretty used to it, and now it just fits him, it suits his personality, it’s just part of who he is”.
Last year, registration was closed when the Bailey’s found out about the competition, but at just eight years old, this “do” has kids division dynasty written all over it.
“I’m never going to cut it,” Emmitt said. His mom added “he gets very nervous when he gets his haircut to tell them to just take enough off of the bottom to make it stay healthy”.
Despite getting national press coverage, and even a shoutout from Badger football legend JJ Watt, Mullet Boy says his favorite part of this experience is getting to spray the firehose at his local fire station for a mullet photoshoot.
