MADISON, Wis. — The Labor Day Weekend is expected to be a busy one in downtown Madison, with the Badgers’ football home opener at Camp Randall, the annual Taste of Madison event and the Dane County Farmers’ Market all expected to draw large crowds.
Coupled with the holiday weekend — the unofficial last hurrah of summer — and the return of students to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, businesses are gearing up for a spike in customers.
“It’s a really busy week. It’s the first Badger game… so we’re very excited,” Chloe Madison, the general manager of Short Stack Eatery on State Street, said. “We’ve got a lot of out-of-towners, a lot of parents coming back, we’ve got students coming back.”
Lines at Short Stack extended outside the restaurant on Friday, and employees expect the number of hungry customers to only grow.
“It’s exciting, it’s just kind of steady, so we’re just trying to get prepped and make sure we have enough product and our staff is well rested,” Madison said.
The return of students to the city has meant more people to fill job openings, which downtown businesses said should help them serve eager customers this holiday weekend.
